Editorial Internships
Austin Fit Magazine offers editorial internship opportunities every fall, spring and summer semester. Interns play a crucial role in our magazine production in terms of creating content for both digital issues and online.
Interns will gain valuable, hands-on experience writing and copy-editing pieces for our magazine. They will work closely with the Director of Content to improve their writing and reporting process, brainstorm ideas and pitch pieces.
Duties include:
- Brainstorming and writing articles that fit with the AFM brand
- Fact-checking, editing and proofreading their own articles before they go live
- Researching ideas to pitch
- Reaching out to and interviewing sources for their stories
- Learning the editorial process
- Receiving feedback and support on writing and reporting
- Potentially helping proofread the digital issue before going live
- Brainstorming photos to use for their articles (stock, photographer request, sent in)
Requirements/Preferences:
- Must be able to communicate via Slack
- Must be available for at least an hour the first week of every month for pitch meetings (the Director of Content will coordinate a day that works for the whole group)
- Must have great attention to detail and the ability to work independently
- Must have an interest in writing about health, wellness, nutrition and/or fitness in Austin
- Must be able to meet deadlines efficiently and communicate effectively with the Director of Content throughout the month to ensure completion of the story
- Familiarity with AP Style is a plus
- Previous experience working at/interning at a magazine or publication is also a plus
Other things to know:
- This is a remote internship
- Interns are expected to devote 10-15 hours per week
- The internship is unpaid but can be used for class credit

Austin Fit Magazine offers sales internship opportunities every fall, spring and summer semester. Interns play a crucial role in our magazine sales and advertising efforts.
Interns will gain valuable, hands-on experience working with clients and assisting with advertising and advertorial. They will work closely with the publisher to use their sales training to connect with potential clients and represent AFM.
Duties include:
- Participating in sales training as well as learning the media kit, our mission and value proposition
- Prospecting for potential new clients in the Austin area that would be a good fit for AFM
- Researching competitive publications for businesses that are currently advertising
- Sending out our current AFM media kit to potential clients and offer to set up a call with the publisher to answer any questions and learn more about their business
- Sit in on sales calls with the team and take minutes
- Attend weekly staff meetings
Requirements/Preferences:
- Must be able to communicate via phone/text/email
- Must be available to attend weekly staff meetings Tuesday mornings
- Must have great attention to detail and the ability to work independently
- Must be able to meet deadlines efficiently and communicate effectively with the publisher
- Familiarity with sales is a plus
- Previous experience working at/interning at a magazine or publication in the sales department is also a plus
