The term “astronaut” derived from Ancient Greek words “astron” (star) and “nautes” (sailor). On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space aboard Freedom 7 in a suborbital flight that lasted approximately 15 minutes. Just under one year later, on February 20, 1962, John Glenn made history by becoming the first American to orbit the earth on Friendship 7 in a flight that lasted just under 5 hours.
