5 State Parks to Explore Outside the Austin City Limits

With so much access to green spaces in Austin, it’s easy to forget that there’s a whole lot more to explore out there. The state of Texas boasts 89 state parks, historic sites, and natural areas ­— each offering landscapes and experiences you just can’t find in ATX. From desert vistas to coastal beaches and lush marshes, here are five state parks that are worth the trip outside the city limits. Big Bend Ranch State Park

Located in the rugged terrain of West Texas, Big Bend Ranch State Park is the largest state park in Texas. Though it’s only a little over a third the size of its neighboring Big Bend National Park, this protected land encompassing over 300,000 acres along the Rio Grande. Still, there’s over 238 miles of trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through ts dramatic landscapes. Views include include steep canyons, vast desert expanses, and the iconic Chihuahuan Desert flora. Then, due to that dry, rural terrain, this park is a prime spot for stargazing, with some of the darkest night skies in the United States. Camping options range from primitive sites to backcountry campsites, allowing for adventures that are completely immersed in the park’s wilderness.

Big Bend National Park

Monahans Sandhills State Park

For a taste of the Sahara (or the Dune movies) in Texas, Monahans Sandhills State Park is the hidden gem to explore. This park features over 3,800 acres of towering, golden sand dunes. This unique desert landscape offers equally unique experiences like sliding down the vast dunes, hiking the trail-less arid terrain, or even horseback riding through it all. Sunsets here are especially breathtaking, as the golden hour casts an unforgettable warmth over the rippling sands. Withpicnic areas and RV campsites, the park is a great destination for a day trip or an extended stay in the sand and under the stars.

Monahans Sandhills State Park

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro Canyon State Park offers a spectacular display of colorful rock formations and steep cliffs that plunge 800 feet deep. Carved by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River, the canyon’s walls reveal layers of geologic history spanning millions of years. These layers of history make for an amazing, vibrantly colored setting. Activities for taking it all in include hiking and biking over 30 miles of trails, camping in scenic campgrounds, birdwatching for over 250 species, and taking guided horseback tours through the canyon floor. Even more iconic is that park also hosts a renowned outdoor musical drama, “Texas,” during the summer months, celebrating the spirit and history of the region.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Mustang Island State Park

For those seeking a coastal escape, Mustang Island State Park delivers its pristine beaches, dunes, and wetlands. Located near Corpus Christi, this barrier island park offers opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, and fishing. Birdwatchers flock to the park to spot migratory birds and nesting sea turtles. Camping is available both on the beach and in shaded campsites, allowing visitors to stay quite literally “beach-front” for a full Gulf Coast experience. The park is also a popular spot for water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing, with equipment rentals available for those looking to explore the waves and marshes of the park’s diverse ecosystem.

Caddo Lake State Park

Caddo Lake, located on the Texas-Louisiana border, and offers 26,810 acres of natural wonder with its enchanting maze of bayous, Spanish moss-draped cypress trees, and lush wetlands. Caddo Lake State Park provides access to this serene beauty through boat tours, canoeing, and fishing. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the diverse flora and fauna, including alligators, herons, and bald eagles. The park also offers cabins and campsites, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers.
