As a child growing up in France, Sebastien Lagree was always fascinated by human physiques and machines. While in L.A. to pursue a career in entertainment, Lagree discovered that he had a gift for personal training. Inspired by his personal experiences with weight training, cardio, and Pilates, Lagree was motivated to help his clients achieve peak physical performance. To help optimize their time and effort, he restructured the traditional Pilates reformer machine. The result? The Lagree Fitness Method. The method uses an innovative machine called the Megaformer M3S to add elements of resistance and counter-resistance to your training. Followers of the fitness method receive a full-body workout that tones, strengthens, and elongates muscles, while also revving up metabolism, burning fat, increasing flexibility and postural alignment, and restoring the body’s natural balance.
After suffering from a severe cervical spine injury, Marnie Duncan turned to the Barre method to help her recover. Inspired by the results she saw, she founded MOD Fitness on South Lamar in 2012. Those in search of workouts that are continually evolving need look no further than MOD Fitness. MOD Barre classes combine low-impact strength training, cardio, and stretching routines that are welcoming to participants of all fitness levels and athletic abilities. With the opening of their second studio on Burnet Road, they hope to expand their reach in the Austin community.
Get ready to sweat at this new hot yoga studio. Modo flow series classes are done in a 100-degree room at 30–40 percent humidity. Over the course of an hour and a half-long class, students are led through a set of 26 poses specially designed by a yoga therapist. (For students looking for a slower, not-as-sweaty practice, the studio also offers Yin yoga.) Modo Yoga’s environmental awareness can be seen in the studios cork flooring, pull-chain showers, and hypoallergenic radiant heating system. Conveniently located near Crestview station, the studio offers discounts for yogis who ditch the car and ride their bike to class. They also offer weekly community classes for $7 and karma classes for $5. Modo Yoga hopes to open two more locations in Austin soon. Their main goal: to make the practice of yoga accessible to all. (Treat yo’ self: Black Star Co-op and Fuzzy’s Tacos are Modo Yoga’s neighbors. Just sayin’, you did work up quite a sweat.)
