“There comes a moment… when it becomes larger than your startup idea.” –Erin Thompson, Co-Founder of Blenders & Bowls

Blenders & Bowls isn’t your average smoothie joint. It’s an açaí shop that specializes in nutrient-packed açaí bowls, locally sourced food, and a plant-based protein-heavy menu.

In July of 2011, during the height of the food truck craze, best friends Erin Thompson and Kara Jordan introduced Austin to açaí bowls by serving people out of their truck in the sweltering city streets. At the time, “healthy food trucks” didn’t exist or were very few and far between. Knowing they were offering something nutritious and unique, Blenders & Bowls discovered its target market: the athletic community.

In the months that followed, Thompson and Jordan focused on attending different athletic events to put their healthy bowls in front of the right audience. Less than a year later, their efforts paid off as they developed relationships with individuals and businesses in the fitness industry. In the spring of 2012, Thompson and Jordan retired the food truck and Blenders & Bowls opened its first location inside a yoga studio downtown. Now, Blenders & Bowls has three brick-and-mortar locations throughout Austin and a new location in Dallas-Fort Worth. (Both the best friends and the açaí bowls appreciate the move indoors and constant air conditioning.)

Thompson and Jordan created every recipe on their menu. Their O.G. bowl has been the best-selling item on their menu since the food truck days. The blend is made with organic açaí, strawberries, bananas, and a splash of apple juice. It’s served with organic hemp granola, more strawberries and banana slices, and local honey.

Every item on their menu (including the O.G. bowl) is customizable and can be specifically tailored to your needs. Looking for a pre-workout or post-workout meal? Order some fresh avocado toast (made with local sourdough) or try their new Power Hour bowl with 25 grams of protein. Or maybe you’re in the mood for a Chocolate Peanut Butter Lover with extra Nutella?

Every bowl is made to order. Unlike a lot of other açaí shops, Blenders & Bowls doesn’t use the “scooping method” when assembling a bowl. Some açaí bowl bases are pre-made in bulk, frozen, and scooped like ice cream when ordered. However, Blenders & Bowls uses the more traditional method of preparing the blend (without the excessive added sugars). Every bowl is made to order, guaranteeing customers a fresh and custom açaí bowl.

Thompson and Jordan created Blenders & Bowls to share their love of the Brazilian superfruit, açaí. The small purple berry is overflowing with healthy fats, fibers, and antioxidants. When blended, açaí takes on a smooth texture and pairs well with just about anything. The new menu at Blenders & Bowls highlights the nutrient-packed and high-quality ingredients they use to make the best açaí bowls in Austin.
