Winter Skin Care, Even When It’s Not Cold

By Sponsor: Castle Hill Fitness – December 7, 2021

One of the perks of Texas living is that winters here are normally milder than elsewhere. Colder days will come eventually, and even mild temperature changes can take a toll on your skin. The combination of dry air, cold winds, and indoor heating can lead to skin irritations, tightness, and texture issues. Just like your wardrobe changes with the season, so should your skincare routine. With a few simple updates, you can soothe and combat the season’s harsh effects, and help maintain that dewy glow!

Liven up dull, dry skin with these helpful tips from the Wellness Spa Manager and licensed Esthetician at Castle Hill Fitness, Ciara Conway

Keep Wearing Your Sunscreen

Shielding your skin is just as important in the winter months as it is in the summer. Even on a cloudy day, the sun still retains the same damaging effects on the skin. Even snow can reflect over 90% of the sun’s UV rays (though we hope not to worry about that any time soon)! It’s vital to keep applying that SPF before heading outside.

A dual-purpose lotion that acts as a moisturizer with SPF protection is ideal. Stay away from sunscreens with unhealthy chemical ingredients and opt for a broad spectrum zinc oxide-based sunscreen. Zinc oxide is an effective mineral that physically blocks harmful sun rays, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and locks moisture in the skin.

Stay Hydrated

Just because the temperatures aren’t blazing doesn’t mean we can’t get dehydrated. A cold glass of water may seem less refreshing in the chillier temps, but it’s important to keep up with hitting the daily recommended water intake (half of your bodyweight in ounces). Not only will that keep your whole body functioning at its best overall, your skin gets the crucial moisture it needs to stay nice and soft. Stay hydrated, and your skin will thank you for it!

A water-based moisturizer will add an additional layer of moisture and nourishment. Even if your skin tends to be oily, sun exposure can still dehydrate the skin, and cause it to produce more oil to compensate.

 Don’t Overdue the Moisturizer

Avoid piling on the moisturizer to combat dryness – the skin can only absorb so much. To truly hydrate the skin, add a facial oil or a hydrating serum before applying moisturizer. Think of it as feeding your skin first, and then locking in the moisture with moisturizer. Bonus perk: a facial oil will give you that radiant glow!

Keep Exfoliating

Exfoliate once or twice a week to help eliminate dead, dry skin cells and to keep your skin clear. Sweating still happens in the winter, and can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Dry skin can be more sensitive, so be gentler with the exfoliation, but keep it up to keep looking fresh.
